Internet Telephone (VOIP) vs. Regular Landlines

When it comes to buying a home phone there are two different types to choose from. Internet Telephone (VoIP) or a regular landline.

Landline

A landline is simply put, a phone plugged into a wall jack, where the signal comes from wires ran from the house underground to a green box somewhere near or in your yard.

VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol)

An internet telephone or VoIP, is simply put, a phone plugged into your modem. This signal comes from the internet rather than the lines ran through your home and into a box in your yard. It's also a lot cheaper than landlines.

There are only 2 differences between using a VoIP and a landline. That's the price, VoIP is a lot cheaper than landlines. You can typically get an unlimited local and long distance plan with all the features for about $20 per month. The other difference is VoIP phones do not work well with alarm systems. So if you have a home alarm that's something to consider. You can read more on this matter here VoIP with ADT

Recommendation

If you don't have an alarm system definitely go the VoIP route. You will also need a High Speed Internet connection of at least 4-6 MBps for it to work most efficiently.

If you have an alarm system still go with the VoIP. It's cheaper to get a basic landline and Save Online with AT&T or with Verizon Residential Service and get VoIP internet phone service with Phone Power's Best Choice Residential Plans for $14.95/mo.

There are many VoIP phone services out here, but Phone Power is hands down the best as far as pricing, reliability, range (can be used anywhere in US) and has the best features. You also don't have to get a contract and there's no credit check!
