oDesk is an online job firm that allows employers (buyers) to create online jobs coordinated and paid through the company's website. Employers can post jobs for a one-time fee of $45, and freelance workers (providers) can create profiles as their online resume and bid on jobs for free.

The company puts potential providers through screenings by requiring that you pass a "new user's" test, complete your profile and the optional but recommended completion of tests in the area of work you wish to provide services for.

The company collects 10 percent of the payment made to providers; however, this does not effect the provider's pay, just how much the buyers pay out.

Payments are made through the site itself, and they also handle many bookkeeping tasks for the transaction. In addition to the marketplace aspect and the payment/bookkeeping services, the company uses collaborative software that allows employers to see a provider's progress while he or she is on billing time. So periodically (6 times per hour), a snapshot of your screen is sent to the employer (buyer) to ensure that you are actually working.
